Back-to-school fashion: Top trends to rock this fall
Heading into fall means just one thing – back to school and college. While there are still a few weeks of vacation to enjoy it’s time to start thinking about returning to your desk. But don’t focus on the schoolwork, sports or teachers – think fashion, particularly as the stores are bringing out their new fall lines. The average American family spends $59 a month on women’s clothes according to 2013 statistics from Statistic Brain, but we bet you are looking to spend a little more at the beginning of fall, particularly when there are new trends to pick up on. Wherever you live, hit the mall armed with this list of key trends to help you decide what to wear when school starts.
Grunge may be a 90s thing but this fall the look is updated to include a sweeter edge. Don’t go full-on with the messy style of Nirvana but instead choose lace dresses with colored Doc Marten boots, or a floaty top over dressed-down camouflage pants. If you want to add another trend to the grunge look, think animal prints. The classic leopard print or zebra print is making a comeback but it doesn’t have to look tacky – wear some leopard patterned pumps, or a zebra belt over a band t-shirt.
Think summer festivals without the mud and the dirt. Go for a carefree style with layered pieces including sheer tops over t-shirts, tight tanks and short shorts. Another trend set to be a big hit in fall is the boho/ preppie look – the opposite of the indie style, really, as it makes use of smart blazers, fedora hats, and tight jeans. Faux leather is a good fabric to look for to update your look. Faux leather is obviously cheaper than the real thing and can be more comfortable. Look out for items that combine color and texture in unexpected ways for a more dramatic look.
Military and luxury
Go for the military look with cargo pants, army jackets, lace-up boots and a splash of olive green. You can pick up items to match this trend at thrift shops for a few bucks. If you’re not keen on looking like you should be in the forces, try geometric prints to go into fall with a bang. There were a lot of designers on the fall show catwalks displaying loud and brightly colored prints on dresses and tops. Go as bold as you dare, or if you are a little shy then wear the colors and prints on accessories or choose a print that has two colors rather than seven.

To look current, give yourself a little touch of luxury whatever your budget. Add a small amount of ornate jewelry, some intricate beading, or a top made from silk or velvet. You don’t need to add much – just enough to create an impression.
You can find examples of all these trends at small boutiques or chain stores, whether you are shopping near miami airport, browsing the stores in New York, or window shopping in Los Angeles. Grab a style or two and show off your look with confidence when you start back at college.
