After Earth: A Review of This Summer Release
For many people, watching movies is one of the very best ways to have fun and spend time with friends and family. With the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, there have been many mixed reviews, although most of them are certainly not in the movie’s favor. Yet, why do so many people consider After Earth to be such a big disappointment?
After Earth is set on Earth 1,000 years after the human race has fled to a new planet due to cataclysmic events. The story revolves around a father and son duo (played by Will Smith and Jaden Smith) that have crashed on Earth where they must fight to survive and be rescued. Unfortunately, the son has to navigate the dangerous terrain alone (where creatures have evolved to seek out and destroy humans) due to his father’s injuries to place a distress signal.
Although M. Night Shyamalan is notorious for creating and directing storylines that do not offer any surprises or audience engagement, he is not entirely to blame forAfter Earth’s disappointments. In fact, Will Smith wrote out the original story (that was clearly designed to shine more light on Jaden Smith’s acting career).
Unfortunately, while the concept originally may have held some promise, it did not carry over so well on film. Many people rate the movie poorly because of the awkward dialogue and lack of plot twists.
In After Earth, many reviewers comment about how it is very blatant that the movie was written to put Jaden Smith in the spotlight so that he could follow in his father’s footsteps. Unfortunately, many people were not impressed by the young actor’s acting, and found him not to be strong or charismatic. In fact, many people found his acting to be too “bratty” to create a likeable character.
However, Jaden Smith is not alone when it comes to reviewers pointing out the film’s bad acting. Due to the fact that the characters were not supposed to show fear, Will Smith’s acting was also not considered to be the best. Since Will Smith’s character had been restricted to his chair and spoke in a monotone voice throughout the movie, moviegoers were also unable to make a human connection.
The Special Effects
Just like with Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, many people were not impressed with the special effects (although some agree that After Earth’s special effects are better than those used in The Happening and The Last Airbender).
With the creatures often begin described as “blobs,” it is easy to see that the special effects leave much to be desired as a whole. Whether you are watching the movie for the first time in theater or through direct-ticket.net (
After Earth is a movie that should not be taken too seriously. However, if you have some time to kill, the movie can generate enough interest to keep the conversation flowing.
