As you can see, the recent trend in Hollywood is the continuation of movie franchises. Several of the most anticipated top movies of 2013 are parts of popular film franchises. Peter Jackson brings his second installment of the Hobbit films to theatres with “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”. In this episode Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarves continue their quest to get their gold back from Smaug the Dragon. Katniss and Peeta have to return to defend their titles in the follow up to The Hunger Games called “Catching Fire”. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the legendary comic hero in The “Wolverine”.

If you enjoy Biography picks then this will be a good year for you. Angelina Jolie dons the headdress to portray “Cleopatra”. Michael Douglas will take a turn playing Liberace while Matt Damon stars as his longtime lover in “Behind the Candelabra”. “Hands of Stone” will be the story of legendary boxer, Roberto Duran. Martin Scorsese also plans to bring old blue eyes to the big screen with Sinatra. “Captain Phillips” will tell the true story of Captain Richard Phillips’ battle with Somali Pirates.

There will be plenty of Hollywood movie sequels this year as Hollywood unleashes “A Good Day to Die Hard”, “The Hangover 3”, “Iron Man 3”, “Zombie Land 2”, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5”,” Fast & Furious 6”, and “Jurassic Park 4”.
If you are in the mood for a comedy you’ll want to see Steve Carrel’s portrayal of “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”. If you prefer a good Science Fiction adventure you’ll want to see Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith in “After Earth”.

Despite names like “bulky”, on the red carpet there was also room for director Len Wiseman and actor Bryan Cranston (already seen and appreciated in the television series Breaking Bad). But back to the two protagonists of Total Recall: Which do you prefer between Kate and Jessica?

Following in his footsteps was almost the entire cast of the most anticipated film of the summer (in the U.S. will come out Friday): Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Gary Oldman. Many guests who attended the screening, among others, another great director, Ron Howard. Will be able to see anything with those eyes?

So, here’s Sarah Jessica at the London premiere of “Sex and the City.” We’re down to 17 days until the U.S. premiere and I’m back to ambivalence about it. First, I hated the idea. Then, I warmed to it which progressed to really wanting to see it. Now I’m back to meh. Meh isn’t good. Meh gets you nowhere. I actually want to get back to at least tepid. This may be achievable if I don’t have to see any commercials for the movie and hear SJP say “Hello, Lov-AH!” It’s the “hello, Lov-AH” that drives me nuts. Maybe if I focus on the other characters I can soldier through. Possibly.

Speaking of, the other ladies look lovely. But they don’t have the ghost of Carrie Bradshaw to answer to.

So Liv and Michelle were both at film screenings on Monday night. Liv showed up at an “Iron Man” screening at the Tribeca Film Festival and Michelle was at the premiere of her upcoming movie, “Made of Honor.” That’s the Patrick Dempsey “My Best Friend’s Wedding” redux with McDreamy in the Julia Roberts role. I hated that movie on basic principles and this one doesn’t look any better, but how come I find myself wanting to see it? I certainly have better things to do with my money, let alone my time, and yet….

No, must resist. I’ll end up annoyed and irritated by everyone in the theater who laughs at the stale jokes.

Who am I kidding? I’ll get sucked in. I hate you, Hollywood.

Another new movie, the crime thriller, “Street Kings,” starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker, came in at number 2, with $12 million in estimated receipts.

“21,” which had been the top grossing film during the last two weeks, rounded out the third position this weekend with $11 million, followed by “Nim’s Island” at $9 million, “Leatherheads” at $6.21 million and “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” at $6 million.

“Smart People,” starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church and Ellen Page, came in a No. 7 with $4.2 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were “The Ruins,” $3.25 million; “Superhero Movie,” $3.11 million; and “Drillbit Taylor,” $2.07 million.

But, no, Tommy is the manliest man to have ever manned, let’s not forget that. He’s so macho that according to Just Jared, he’s telling anyone who will listen about how he wants to have a “play date” with his BFF, David Beckham.

“We will go out and fly some airplanes or race some cars or something like that. I’ll talk to Victoria and see if she’s all right with that. But we’ll have some fun.”

Fly airplanes and race cars. Of course! If he wasn’t working the “I’m a happily married man” angle he probably would’ve added “then we’ll go see some strippers, cause I’m all about the boobies.”

He also added:

“I know what a competitor he is and I have great admiration for him as an athlete, as a father, and as a husband. The guy works so hard – I know personally how dedicated this guy is, and how committed.”

Which is more articulate than anything he’s ever said about his future ex-wife–who didn’t attend yesterday’s premiere, as she was back in Berlin getting her battery recharged spending time doing whatever it is that Katie Holmes does (still working on that, but it usual involves looking miserable and spending money).

Here’s the Zombie accompanying Maverick to his “Lions for Lambs” premiere in Berlin. Note the poor posture, the too big bodice of her glittery prom dress that looks like it’s made out of leftover material from Xenu’s spaceship, the dead, dead eyes. Always the eyes tell the story. Deals with the devil rarely work out–that’s what Kate is coming to find out. Not too bright, that one.

But, really, who cares what Mav looks like–it’s the movie that counts, right? And everyone is going to adore this flick, yes? Right, Variety?

“Talky, back-bendingly liberal but also deeply patriotic, “Lions for Lambs” plays like all the serious footnotes scripter du jour Matthew Michael Carnahan left out of “The Kingdom,” Robert Redford‘s first helming chore in seven years, and his most directly political pic yet, amounts to a giant cry of “Americans, get engaged!” wrapped in a star-heavy discourse that uses a lot of words to say nothing new. Apart from the curio value of Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise headlining the movie equivalent of an Off Broadway play, this first outing by newly resurgent UA doesn’t look likely to roar its way to significant B.O. gains.”

Or not. And with his first movie with his new studio. Sad…snerk. Actually, this worries me for Suri. She’ll probably get put on double-time photo ops. Poor kid.

And where, exactly, did this stunt get them? “Rendition” opened this weekend to very meh reviews and only made $4 million at the box office, making it both a critical and financial dud–the latest in a long line of war/terrorist-themed movies that haven’t performed. Maybe it’s time to shelve those for awhile, huh, Hollywood?
